Orléans Town Centre and the Environment
The Orléans Town Centre Partnership and the City of Ottawa are committed to delivering the Orléans Arts Centre to a LEED Silver level. The LEED green building system is now recognized as the standard for measuring building sustainability and prove the building truly is “Green”. LEED stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design" and is a rating system designed by the US Green Building Council in 1974. The LEED rating program has grown to over 6,000 projects in 28 countries.
The LEED rating system addresses 6 major areas:
- Sustainable sites
- Water efficiency
- Energy and Atmosphere
- Material and resources
- Indoor environmental quality
- Innovation and design process
Each project is rated on a scoring system based on a set of required credits from each of the six major rating categories. The buildings can qualify for 4 levels of certification: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
One interesting “Green” initiative that we would like to highlight is the plan to use a tree from the existing site in the millwork used for the interior of the Arts Centre. This sustainable action, in a small way, links the existing site to the future Arts Centre.
